In cell biology, a vesicle is a cellular organelle that is located inside and outside the cell and consists of a fluid surrounded by a bilayer lipid membrane. Vesicles are formed naturally during the processes of secretion (cellular excretion), absorption (cellular insertion), and transport of substances into the cell. Vesicles can be prepared artificially, in which case they are called liposomes. If the membrane is composed of a single lipid layer, then it is called mono-lamellar lipid vesicles, and in other cases it is called multi-platelet vesicles. The membrane surrounding the cell is also a lamellar phase, and similarly to the plasma membrane and the vesicle membrane can fuse with the plasma membrane to release its contents outside the cell. The vesicles can fuse with other organelles in the cell.
