Uyghurs identify as citizens of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China. This minority is one of the 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities in China. The Chinese government rejects the idea that they are considered indigenous, and only recognizes them as a regional minority within a multicultural country.

The Uyghurs have traditionally inhabited a series of oases spread across the Taklamakan Desert that includes the Tarim Basin, an area historically controlled by many civilizations including China, Mongols, Tibet, and Turkic civilizations. The Uighurs began to convert to Islam in the 10th century, and they converted to Islam significantly by the 16th century, as Islam played an important role in the culture and identity of the Uyghurs.

80% of Xinjiang’s Uyghurs still live in the Tarim Basin, and the rest live in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, which is located in the historical Dzungaria region. The largest community of Uighurs living in another region of China is in Taoyuan County, north-central Hunan.

The World Uyghur Congress estimates the Uyghur population outside China to be around 1.1-1.6 million. There are large Uyghur diaspora communities in Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Some small Uyghur communities live in Canada, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Afghanistan, Australia, the United States and the Netherlands.

Estimates released since 2016 indicate that more than a million Uyghurs are being held in re-education camps in Xinjiang. According to some information within the Chinese government obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), the main feature of the camps is to ensure adherence to the ideology of the Chinese Communist Party. Prisoners are held continuously in the camps for a minimum of 12 months – depending on their performance in tests of Chinese ideology – and communication between inmates and their family members is limited to one phone call per week. Human Rights Watch released a report in 2017 saying, “Chinese government agents should release people being held in illegal political education centers in Xinjiang, and close these camps. UN and several media reports have determined that up to a million people are being held in re-education camps in this region. As of November 2019, 1 in 10 Uyghurs are being held in re-education camps.
