Owners can see tire pressure, antilock brakes or other warning lights on the dashboard before a problem occurs. They may also smell burning or melting.
Owners will be notified from April 30th. Dealers will replace the fuses in the electrical junction box to fix the problem.
In documents released by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday, Kia said it had no reports of accidents, fires or injuries due to the problem.
The summons comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating the Kia and Hyundai engine fires in 2019. The agency opened the investigation after the nonprofit Automotive Safety Center filed a petition seeking the investigation.
When the investigation began, the agency said it had complaints from owners about more than 3,100 fires, 103 injuries, and one death.
Last November, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Kia and Hyundai should pay $137 million in fines to improve safety because they moved too slowly to recall more than one million vehicles with engines that could fail.
Kia had to pay $27 million and invest $16 million in safety performance measures. NHTSA said another $27 million payment will be delayed as long as Kia meets safety requirements.
Kia denied the US allegations but said it wanted to avoid a protracted legal battle.
According to NHTSA documents, engine failure and fire problems with Kia and Hyundai have affected more than 6 million vehicles since 2015.
